We are not here to sell you anything. But we are here to solve the problem of what to do with those ugly windows that don’t match anything anymore!
If your home still has cream aluminium colonial-style or French-style windows, you already know the struggle. The house may be modernised, painted, landscaped, and styled beautifully—but those dated window frames with their soft cream or chalky beige tones instantly age the entire facade.
Even worse? Many painters tell you those colonial bars can’t be masked properly. They spray over the glass, let the paint flood around the trims, or tell you your only option is full window replacement.
That’s not true. And it’s certainly not the way we do things at RepaintPro.
We specialise in repainting colonial and French-style aluminium windows. And more specifically—we specialise in transforming them from tired cream or silver into crisp, sharp gloss black that makes your home stand out for all the right reasons.
What Are Colonial or French-Style Aluminium Windows?
Colonial-style windows are often defined by their:
Multiple panes or divided light patterns Internal bars or decorative cross-pieces Rectangular or square gridding, often on sliders or fixed panels Typically painted in cream, white, or beige when originally installed
They were common in homes built from the 80s through early 2000s across the Gold Coast. In their time, they added character. But today, most of these windows look faded, tired, and mismatched against modern paintwork and finishes.
We often find them on:
???? Brick homes in Ashmore
???? Rendered houses in Benowa and Clear Island Waters
???? Coastal properties in Palm Beach
???? Family homes in Mudgeeraba, Robina, and Reedy Creek
???? Townhouses and villas in Southport, Elanora, and Hope Island
Why Cream Needs to Go
Cream or off-white aluminium frames may have been popular in the past, but today they often create a dull or dated appearance. And when the rest of the home is updated—rendered, re-roofed, painted, landscaped—it creates visual tension.
You’ve modernised everything else… but the windows are stuck in a time warp.
Worse still, the colonial bars inside the glass draw more attention to the outdated colour. It makes the frames stand out in all the wrong ways.
When we repaint these windows in gloss black, everything changes.
Why Gloss Black?
Gloss black is:
✅ Bold
✅ Crisp
✅ Reflective
✅ Elegant
✅ And timeless
It creates clean outlines, strong shadow lines, and perfectly frames the structure of colonial windows. Instead of looking busy or fussy, the windows become architectural features.
Gloss black works with:
Modern render and grey walls Crisp white trims Timber or stone cladding Glass balustrades Hamptons-style interiors with contrast tones
It’s a transformative choice that elevates the home while still preserving the character of the colonial-style layout.
Why Not Replace the Windows?
That’s a question we get asked all the time. And here’s the truth:
In most cases, there is no need to replace perfectly good windows. Replacement involves:
❌ Removing all frames, architraves, and trims
❌ Potentially damaging render or brickwork
❌ Breaking tiles or plaster inside
❌ Weeks of wait time
❌ Thousands in unnecessary costs
If your window frames are structurally sound, there is no reason to replace them.
Repainting with the correct process delivers the exact same look and durability, without tearing your house apart.
Our Colonial Window Painting Process
Colonial-style windows require a different level of care and attention, especially when it comes to masking. This is where many painters go wrong—but it’s where we shine.
Here’s how we approach these jobs from start to finish:
1. Careful Inspection and Prep Planning

We begin by assessing:
The existing powder coat condition The condition of glass seals, gaskets, and internal bars The accessibility of each frame Whether the windows open, slide, or are fixed If screens or grills need to be removed or sprayed separately
No two colonial-style windows are the same, and we tailor our approach based on the age and condition of each frame.
2. Cleaning with Wax and Grease Remover
Before we do anything, we clean every inch of the frame using a dedicated wax and grease remover. This step removes:
Sunscreen and oils from hands Salt build-up (especially in coastal suburbs like Tugun and Miami) Contaminants that can prevent adhesion
This is one of the most overlooked—but most critical—steps in aluminium repainting.
3. Sanding and Keying the Surface
We carefully sand all frames by hand and with tools, working around:
Grid lines Inner bars Thin edges Panel corners
This gives the primer a mechanical key to bond to. We don’t miss the small areas — it’s all or nothing.
4. Detailed Masking Around Bars (Not Over Them!)

This is the defining part of colonial-style window painting. We don’t spray over the bars and hope for the best. We take the time to mask around them, so:
The glass stays clean The bars are defined The internal gridding remains crisp
You’ve seen our tape-pull videos on social media — this is that same precision, applied at scale to every colonial-style window we touch.
5. Priming with High-Adhesion Base
We use a specialist primer designed for powder-coated aluminium, applied in white or black depending on the final colour.
This ensures the gloss black top coats bond and wear evenly over time.
6. HVLP Spraying in Gloss Black
We spray multiple coats of gloss black using HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) systems. This ensures:
Fine, even mist application Zero brush marks Full coverage across intricate designs Deep reflective finish
Most jobs require 2–4 coats, with light sanding between coats if needed. This builds a proper film and depth of colour.
Screens, Security Doors, and Sliding Panels
We also remove and repaint:
✅ Flyscreens
✅ Diamond grill security doors
✅ Barrier screen doors
✅ Sliding screens
We clean, sand, prime, and spray these to match the new gloss black finish — so everything looks unified and modern.
Roller Replacement for Sliding Doors
While sliding doors are removed for spraying, we often replace the wheels and rollers. Many homes in Burleigh Heads, Maudsland, and Southport still have original rollers that stick, grind, or derail.
We carry a full stock of replacements — and the difference is immediate.
Where We’ve Done These Jobs
We’ve repainted hundreds of colonial-style windows across the Gold Coast. Just some of the suburbs include:
???? Palm Beach – federation-style homes with ocean views
???? Mudgeeraba – multi-pane cream frames to gloss black
???? Reedy Creek – internal + external colonial sliders
???? Robina – classic brick homes with security grills
???? Elanora – multi-pane panels on rendered homes
???? Currumbin – homes with decorative French doors and matching sliders
???? Southport – split-level homes with colonial windows across 2 storeys
???? Broadbeach Waters – cream windows with grills and flyscreens transformed
No matter the layout, size, or condition — if the aluminium is sound, we can repaint it.
Why Other Painters Avoid These Jobs
We’ve seen other painters walk away from colonial-style windows. Why?
Too time-consuming to mask Too much effort to spray around bars Unsure how to prep powder coat Not confident in adhesion Don’t carry HVLP equipment for fine work
We see it every day — windows that have been brushed, rollered, or flooded with paint. The difference between that and a proper RepaintPro finish is night and day.

Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Do you remove the colonial bars?
No — we mask around them and paint the visible frame. If you have removable bar kits, we can discuss your options. But most internal colonial bars stay in place, and we mask carefully around them.
❓ Can I choose the finish?
Yes. While gloss black is the most popular, we also offer:
Satin black Matt black Monument Charcoal Custom greys and whites
❓ What about the inside of the window?
We paint both internal and external frames if requested. Many homes have internal aluminium that’s silver, cream, or terracotta. We mask and spray these too using low-odour interior-safe coatings.
❓ Will gloss black show marks?
Not if it’s done properly. We use high-build top coats that cure to a smooth, durable gloss. As long as the frames are prepped and sprayed evenly, the finish is clean and long-lasting.
❓ Will it peel?
Not with our system. We:
Clean Degrease Sand Prime Spray 2–4 coats
This is the same method we’ve used on jobs we’ve checked up on 9 years later — and they still look incredible.
