Spraying Aluminium Security Screens with 2-Pac Epoxy Primer and Polyurethane 2-Pac Finish – Gold Coast

Why Aluminium Security Screens Need More Than Just a Colour Change

Aluminium security screens are a fixture across the Gold Coast. They’re designed for safety, airflow, and peace of mind — but over time, their appearance lets homes down. Many still show their original cream, silver, or bronze finishes from decades ago. On top of that, white rust (aluminium oxidation) builds up where the coating fails, leaving powdery marks and weakening adhesion.

A quick brush-over doesn’t solve the problem. Without addressing adhesion and corrosion, the paint will fail within months. That’s why on this project we used a 2-pac epoxy primer system followed by a polyurethane 2-pac topcoat. It’s the same technology used on industrial and commercial aluminium — built for long-term durability in coastal conditions.

The Challenges with Aluminium Screens

Security screens aren’t like flat window frames:

Grille patterns and mesh make spraying angles tricky.

High-contact surfaces — hands, weather, and daily cleaning all wear the coating down faster.

Oxidation is common, especially in coastal areas like Palm Beach, Currumbin, and Southport.

Colour mismatch looks worse when windows are resprayed but screens are left old and faded.

These challenges mean aluminium security screens need a system that not only looks sharp but also resists rust and daily use.

Why 2-Pac Epoxy Primer + 2-Pac Polyurethane is the Answer

Epoxy Primer – The Foundation

Provides exceptional adhesion to bare or sanded aluminium.

Seals the surface, stopping oxygen and moisture from feeding oxidation.

Builds a strong, chemically resistant base layer.

Polyurethane 2-Pac Topcoat – The Finish

Delivers a factory-quality gloss or satin finish.

Provides UV stability and durability in Gold Coast sun.

Offers resistance to hand oils, cleaning products, and daily wear.

Together, they create a system far superior to single-pack paints.

The Step-by-Step Process

1. Preparation – Removing Oxidation and Contaminants

Screens washed thoroughly to remove chalking and salt.

Mechanical sanding across frames and grilles.

Oxidised patches taken back until clean aluminium revealed.

Wax and grease remover applied to ensure no contaminants remain.

2. Masking – Protecting Mesh and Surroundings

For mesh screens, we can remove or tape depending on type.

Nearby surfaces — tiles, render, decking — fully masked.

Overspray protection is essential because polyurethane bonds aggressively.

3. Spraying Epoxy Primer

2-pac epoxy primer applied via HVLP at 28 psi.

Two coats build a strong adhesion layer.

Film build target: 60–80 microns DFT.

Primer seals aluminium and prevents new oxidation from forming.

4. Spraying Polyurethane 2-Pac Topcoat

Polyurethane applied at 25–35 microns per coat.

Multiple coats build up to a 40–60 micron finish.

Gloss or satin chosen depending on design.

The result: a hard, UV-stable coating that resists fading and wear.

5. The Reveal

Masking removed to show crisp edges.

Screens now match freshly sprayed windows.

The finish looks as if the screens were manufactured in the new colour.

The “Before” – Faded, Oxidised Screens

Before spraying, the security screens showed:

Yellowed cream frames clashing with modern painted walls.

White oxidation marks around corners and edges.

Mesh looking newer than the frames — creating imbalance.

The “After” – Factory-Fresh Finish

After spraying with epoxy primer and polyurethane 2-pac:

Frames rich in colour, perfectly even.

Gloss black finish tying into sprayed windows.

No visible oxidation, with a coating system designed to prevent its return.

Screens blending into the overall façade instead of standing out.

Why This Matters on the Gold Coast

Coastal conditions are tough on aluminium. Salt in the air accelerates oxidation, especially around Surfers Paradise, Palm Beach, and Currumbin. Inland areas like Mudgeeraba, Nerang, and Upper Coomera still deal with UV exposure and humidity.

Using the right system means homeowners get:

Durability – Coatings hold up for years.

Consistency – Screens match sprayed frames.

Protection – Oxidation sealed beneath epoxy primer.

Benefits of Spraying Security Screens

Extends lifespan – Reuses existing aluminium, avoids landfill.

Cost-effective – Factory-quality look without replacement.

Durable – Withstands UV, salt, and constant use.

Customisable – Screens sprayed to match window frames and doors.

Eco-friendly – Less waste, longer use of existing materials.

Suburbs We Service

This project could have been anywhere on the Gold Coast because every suburb has aluminium security screens. We’ve resprayed screens and frames across:

Southern suburbs – Palm Beach, Currumbin, Elanora, Tallebudgera, Burleigh Heads, Miami, Tugun, Kirra, Coolangatta.

Central suburbs – Southport, Labrador, Ashmore, Benowa, Bundall, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Chevron Island, Isle of Capri, Main Beach.

Hinterland – Mudgeeraba, Reedy Creek, Bonogin, Worongary, Tallai, Nerang, Gilston, Carrara, Clear Island Waters.

Northern suburbs – Robina, Varsity Lakes, Coomera, Upper Coomera, Helensvale, Oxenford, Arundel, Parkwood, Maudsland, Ormeau, Yatala, Pacific Pines.

FAQs – Spraying Aluminium Security Screens

Q: Why not just replace the screens?
Replacement is costly and disruptive. Spraying achieves the same fresh look for a fraction of the cost.

Q: What makes 2-pac epoxy primer better?
It bonds chemically to aluminium and seals against oxidation, unlike single-pack primers.

Q: Will the polyurethane 2-pac finish chip?
No — it forms a hard, flexible coating designed for long-term durability.

Q: Can you spray the mesh too?
Yes, in many cases mesh can be included, though frames are the main focus.

Q: Do you offer different colours?
Yes — black and white dominate, but Monument, Surfmist, and Ironstone are also common.
