Spraying Black Primer on Aluminium Windows | RepaintPro Gold Coast In Action

If you’ve ever wondered what makes a truly durable, high-end finish when repainting aluminium windows, the answer might surprise you: it’s the part you don’t see — the primer.

In this video, you’ll see us onsite on the Gold Coast spraying black primer on aluminium window frames after full prep work. It’s a critical step in the process and one that most painters either rush or skip entirely. But at RepaintPro, this stage is non-negotiable.

In this blog, we’re diving deep into:

???? What the video shows ⚫ Why we use black primer ???? The full prep process that happens before spraying ???? Why this matters for durability ???? The areas we service across the Gold Coast ???? How to get a quote

Let’s take a closer look behind the scenes.

What the Video Shows ????

The video captures our team at work spraying black primer on a set of aluminium window frames. The surface has already been cleaned, sanded, and masked — and what you’re watching is the final prep step before topcoating.

It might not seem like the “exciting” part, but the primer is where the real quality starts. In fact, the difference between a finish that lasts 6–10 years and one that starts peeling after six months usually comes down to this stage.

We filmed this clip in real conditions — no filters, no edits, just genuine site footage from a residential job on the Gold Coast.

Why Black Primer?

You might be wondering: why black? Why not grey or white?

We use black primer on aluminium windows when the final colour is going to be a darker shade — typically:

???? Monument ???? Matt Black ???? Woodland Grey ???? Deep custom tones

Here’s why black primer works so well in these cases:

It creates depth behind darker colours, making the finish richer It allows for fewer topcoats to achieve full coverage It helps visually mask any underlying colour variations It provides UV-blocking benefits during the curing process

Black primer is especially useful for older aluminium frames that were originally bronze, gum-metal, or other dark finishes.

The Real Work Happens Before the Spray Gun

Although the spraying looks smooth and clean in the video, it’s only possible because of the hours of prep work we complete beforehand.

Let’s walk through exactly what happens before that black primer is applied.

1. Full Surface Cleaning

Every aluminium window is thoroughly degreased using wax and grease remover. This strips away:

Oils from hands and previous cleaners Environmental contaminants (especially in coastal areas) Silicone residue from old sealants

This step is critical — even a small patch of residue can cause primer failure.

2. Mechanical Abrasion

Next, we sand the surface by hand and tool, using sanding pads and detail tools to roughen the powder-coated layer. Why?

Because aluminium is a low surface energy (LSE) material. That means paint won’t stick well unless it has:

A rough surface to grip A clean, dry, and stable base underneath

Mechanical abrasion does the heavy lifting here, opening up the surface for better adhesion.

3. Dust Removal

After sanding, we wipe and vacuum every part of the frame — not just the face but the edges, recesses, and joins.

Dust left behind = trouble for bonding and finish quality.

4. Complete Masking

One of the reasons our black primer lines look so sharp in the video is that we mask with detail and care.

We cover:

Glass Render and brickwork Sills and edges Floors, decking, plants, or tiles below

We use a combination of:

Green edge tape (low-tack, clean release) Professional masking paper Plastic sheeting Drop cloths for ground protection

It’s time-consuming — but it’s what allows us to spray confidently without overspray or bleed.

Why Primer Is Not Optional

We’re still shocked at how many painters skip primer — or try to pass off single-coat jobs as “complete.” This is one of the biggest reasons people call us to fix failed window paints.

Primer isn’t just for coverage — it’s about:

✊ Bonding strength ???? Protection from UV and salt ???? Improved finish and colour clarity

Without primer, topcoats are just sitting on the surface — and the first bit of weather, sun, or cleaning can lift or crack the finish.

Black primer, when done right, gives us a bulletproof base for dark topcoats — which is exactly what you see in the footage.

What Comes Next: The Topcoat

After the black primer has cured, we move on to topcoating. This usually happens the same day (weather permitting), and involves spraying 2–4 coats of your chosen colour.

Most clients opt for:

Monument (Colorbond) Satin Black Woodland Grey Matte Custom Finishes

The number of coats depends on:

The condition of the original surface The depth and tone of the new colour The required film build

Because the primer is already dark, we don’t have to overload the surface — just enough for coverage and long-term durability.

FAQs About Primer and Spraying

❓ Do you always use black primer?

No — only when the topcoat is a dark colour. For white, silver, or Surfmist jobs, we use white Norglass primer to keep the final tone clean and crisp.

❓ Can I paint over old powder coating?

Yes — with proper cleaning, sanding, and priming, powder-coated aluminium can be successfully resprayed. We do this every day.

❓ Do I need to be home for spraying?

Not necessarily. Most clients choose to go out for the day. We just need access and good weather. The smell dissipates within a few hours.

❓ How long does it last?

We offer a 6-year workmanship warranty, and many of our finishes still look great 8–10 years later. Primer is a big reason for that.

❓ Will you remove my security screens?

Yes. We can remove, spray, and remesh them on request. It’s all included in the quoting process.

What We Spray (It’s More Than Just Windows)

While this video shows black primer on aluminium windows, we use this same system across:

Sliding aluminium doors Security screen doors and panels Garage doors Slatted aluminium gates Shopfronts and commercial façades Colorbond fences (similar process)

If it’s powder-coated or aluminium — and it’s faded, oxidised, or outdated — we can respray it.

Final Thoughts – Why This Video Matters

We know primer isn’t glamorous. It’s not the glossy reveal or the side-by-side before/after. But it’s the step that makes everything else work.

That’s why we filmed it.

It shows:

The attention to detail in our masking The evenness of the HVLP spray The way the surface absorbs the primer after sanding And the clean, prepped condition before topcoat begins

This is what separates good painters from great ones.

If you want a finish that lasts — that looks great and holds up for years — start with the team that respects every step, including this one.
