The Full Painting Process

1. Assessment and Preparation

Every window project begins with a close inspection of the surface condition. We wash and degrease the aluminium thoroughly to remove all contaminants. Old silicone is sometimes removed if needed, and any corrosion or damage is carefully addressed before we proceed.

2. Masking and Taping

Our taping process uses high-adhesion, low-residue tape systems that protect surfaces while holding up under primer and multiple coats of paint. Taping is often one of the most time-consuming parts of the job, but it’s also one of the most important.

3. Priming

A specialist primer is applied to ensure adhesion of the topcoat. For powder-coated aluminium, this step is essential. It allows our finish to bind and cure properly. In this project, we used a black primer to provide depth and enhance the finish of the gloss black topcoat.

4. Top Coats in Gloss Black

We apply two coats of high-quality, UV-stable acrylic paint in a gloss black finish. The product is specifically formulated for aluminium and provides long-term durability against weather, UV, and abrasion. It’s also quick-drying and low in odour.

5. Tape Removal & Detailing

As shown in the video, tape removal is performed slowly and deliberately after the paint cures to the correct level. This ensures the edges are razor-sharp, and no paint lifts during tape removal. We do a final check for any imperfections and tidy up any residual masking materials.

All our work comes with a 6-year workmanship warranty through our QBCC licence. That said, we’ve revisited homes over 8.5 years later, and the finish is still performing beautifully — no fading or peeling when maintained properly.

Can you paint over powder coat?

Absolutely. In fact, most of the aluminium we paint is powder coated. Our professional system — from cleaning and sanding through to priming and finishing — ensures excellent adhesion and long-term durability.

What about flyscreens and security screens?

These can either be removed and resprayed separately or left in place depending on your preference. We even offer a re-meshing service if needed after spraying.

Do I need to be home?

You’re welcome to stay home during the job, but it’s often best to step out for the day or for 4–5 hours. We wear full respirator masks while spraying because the products are not intended to be inhaled. The smell clears quickly after we’re done.

How long does it take?

Most residential projects — including windows, doors, and gates — are completed within a week from start to finish.

What Kind of Paint Do You Use?

We use premium-grade, low-sheen or gloss acrylic paints for residential projects. These paints are designed for exterior aluminium and offer a high level of UV resistance. For commercial jobs, especially shop fronts and mullions, we upgrade to 2PAC finishing systems for superior durability in high-traffic zones.
