Inside RepaintPro’s precision masking process and why it sets your finish apart
Introduction: The Power of the Line
In the world of aluminium window repainting, few things matter more than the line — the edge where your freshly sprayed frame meets the untouched glass, the wall, or the brickwork. That line is what your client notices first. It’s what separates a DIY job from a professional finish.
At RepaintPro, we don’t just “mask off” the area — we tape with surgical precision, and we’ve developed this process over thousands of jobs across the Gold Coast. If you’ve ever seen one of our tape removal videos, you’ll know the satisfaction: a crisp peel revealing a flawless edge beneath.
In this post, we’ll explain:
Why proper taping is crucial How we approach masking for aluminium window spraying Common mistakes we avoid How taping impacts durability and client satisfaction Why every job gets the same care — residential or commercial
What Do We Mean by “Sharp Taping”?
Sharp taping refers to the methodical, accurate application of masking tape and sheeting to define the sprayed area — with no paint creep, feathered edges, or irregular lines.
It’s the clean divide between:
Frame and glass Frame and render Frame and surrounding brickwork Sliders and internal reveals Security screens and fixed panels
Poor taping results in overspray, blurred lines, or worse — paint where it shouldn’t be.
Why It Matters So Much in Aluminium Spray Work
Unlike traditional brush or roller work, spray painting applies paint as a fine mist. That’s what gives aluminium frames their glassy, uniform finish — but it also means:
Overspray travels unless contained Edges must be taped tightly — or paint bleeds under Any leak in masking will show immediately upon tape removal
Because our finishes look factory-perfect, every edge has to be intentional. You can’t undo overspray or touch up a sprayed finish with a brush. It’s either right, or it’s redone.
Our Process: How We Tape Every Window
Whether we’re painting 3 windows or 300 shopfront mullions, the process is the same:
1. Clean the Surface
Before tape even touches the frame, we clean:
The glass The aluminium The render/brick around it
Why? Tape sticks best to clean surfaces. Dust, grease, or oxidised powder-coat causes failure.
2. Edge Taping
We start with fine-line tape or high-quality masking tape right where the paint line needs to be. This sets the boundary.
Edges are:
Pressed firmly with a plastic spreader Aligned within millimetres of the true edge Laid in full-length sections, not short pieces
We never tear-and-tuck. Everything is placed to match the frame’s true shape.
3. Glass and Surrounding Masking
Once the edge tape is down, we build out the protection:
Plastic drop sheets for the glass Painter’s paper or builder’s wrap for walls and render Tape bridges between materials Floor drop sheets or tenting for indoor jobs
It’s not about speed — it’s about control.
4. Overlap and Spray Path
We factor in:
Spray direction (to avoid back-blow) Coverage area (especially inside window recesses) Wind (for outdoor jobs)
Taping is adjusted to allow natural spray movement without letting overspray escape. We tape deeper inside when spraying on windy days or spraying high-gloss black (which shows everything).
5. Final Press Down
Before priming, we recheck every line:
No raised edges No loose film Every sheet tucked in
One final check avoids rework.
What Happens When Taping Is Rushed?
Here’s what we’ve seen when taping isn’t done right:
Fuzzy lines along the frame Bleed-under on glass — visible forever Overspray on bricks or tiles (especially rough surfaces) Glue residue from cheap tape Torn sealant or frame damage from tape pulling
None of this happens with our method. In fact, our tape removal is a show of its own — smooth, sharp, satisfying.
Tape Removal: The Reveal Moment
We always wait until the final coat is cured enough to release tape without pulling.
Then:
Tape is peeled at a 45° angle Removed slowly and evenly Each window checked for perfection underneath
This moment often gets filmed — because the reveal shows off the entire project. And we trust our tape work enough to show it live.
Commercial Shopfronts: Taping at Scale
When spraying aluminium mullions, sliders, and shopfronts in:
Broadbeach Robina Southport Gold Coast shopping centres
…we often tape:
Floor-to-ceiling glass High-traffic areas Internal partitions
Commercial work requires:
Fast setup, but never loose taping Protection of signage, lighting, and fixed glass Accurate masking on anodised finishes
We use low-adhesive tape where needed to protect delicate materials and remove everything cleanly post-job.
Indoor Masking for Residential Projects
When spraying interior frames (like in our recent Pearl White job), masking is even more critical.
Dust and spray are fully contained Curtains, carpet, furniture are protected Walls are sheeted down to skirting Glass and screens are taped with zero overspray
We use low-odour paint indoors, but it’s our taping discipline that makes the process stress-free for the homeowner.
How Sharp Taping Protects Your Investment
Our taping isn’t just about looks — it also protects:
Frames — no accidental overspray on parts not being painted Glass — never needs blade scraping Render — no stuck paint or cleanup damage Paint — lasts longer when no edges are compromised
We’ve been called in to fix other painter’s mistakes — overspray on brand-new windows, messy lines, or patchy coverage. It almost always starts with rushed or sloppy masking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you tape every job the same way?
Yes. Whether it’s one window in Carrara or an entire building in Pacific Fair, our taping is consistent. It’s part of our brand and finish promise.
What kind of tape do you use?
We use premium low-tack and fine-line tapes designed for clean release and crisp lines — not hardware store masking rolls. Each tape is chosen based on surface type.
Do you charge extra for masking?
No — masking is part of the prep process, built into our system. We never rush this step. It’s not optional.
Can you spray near rough bricks or render?
Yes. We tape to match the contour of brick or render edges. For rough surfaces, we may prime a masking base to avoid bleed or use builder’s wrap for coverage.
What if I need windows done fast?
We can complete most projects inside a week — but masking still gets full attention. It’s what makes the finish last. We never sacrifice that to “go quicker.”
Areas We Work
We bring this precision taping system to homes and businesses across:
Broadbeach Mermaid Waters Robina Mudgeeraba Reedy Creek Varsity Lakes Southport Ashmore Nerang Bundall Clear Island Waters Pacific Fair Benowa Palm Beach Elanora Burleigh Heads Carrara Merrimac Tugun
Whether it’s 3 sliders in a unit or 50 mullions at a commercial site, we apply the same standards.
Final Word: Sharp Taping = Sharp Finish
At RepaintPro, we don’t just “paint windows.” We deliver sharp lines, flawless finishes, and work that holds up for years — and it all starts with the tape.
We’ve built our reputation on finishes that look factory-applied. But it’s the groundwork — the clean taping, the careful masking — that makes all the difference.
If you’re after results that stand up to close inspection, tape matters.
And no one tapes like we do.
