We just wanted to share a popular YouTube video from one of our recent jobs — spraying faded aluminium windows in gloss lacquer black.
If you’re someone who enjoys transformation content, this one hits all the right notes — prep, prime, spray, and that incredibly satisfying tape peel at the end. It’s always the crowd favourite (and honestly, one of ours too).
The windows started out tired, patchy, and chalky from years of sun and salt air. But with the right prep and professional spraying, we brought them straight back to life — with a sleek gloss finish that looked like they just came out of the factory.
Let’s walk you through the process and show you why repainting your aluminium windows is one of the smartest upgrades you can make.
Before: Faded Frames, Patchy Powder Coat
You know the look — that dull, faded silver or cream colour that was popular decades ago. These windows had lost all their original lustre. UV damage had turned the finish chalky and uneven, and the frames stood out (for all the wrong reasons) against a freshly painted render.
The homeowner wasn’t keen to rip them out and start again. But the good news?
You don’t need to replace aluminium windows. You just need to respray them.
Why Gloss Lacquer Black?
Gloss lacquer black is one of our most requested colours, and for good reason. It has that luxury architectural feel that just makes a home look cleaner and more modern.
Here’s why people choose gloss black:
???? Sharp contrast – looks amazing with light or neutral walls ???? Reflective gloss – helps modernise dated frames ???? Durable – 2-pack finishes hold up in harsh Aussie conditions ???? Adds instant curb appeal – especially when selling or renovating
Plus, when sprayed properly, it gives off a glass-like finish that ties in beautifully with window glazing.
Our Window Spraying Process – What You’re Seeing in the Video
We filmed this job start to finish — and it’s now one of our most popular clips on YouTube. The gloss comes up beautifully, but that only happens because of the work that goes in before we even pick up the spray gun.
Here’s a breakdown of the full process:
1. Surface Prep is Everything
We start by:
Cleaning the entire frame with wax and grease remover Sanding down the old powder coat using mechanical abrasion Dusting, vacuuming and wiping every inch of the surface
This ensures maximum grip for our etch primer. If you skip this step (or rush it), you’ll get peeling paint down the track. We don’t cut corners — this prep work is what makes the paint last 6–10 years or more.
2. Masking Like a Machine
This is where the pros are separated from the cowboys.
We mask every pane of glass, brick edge, sill, and wall with:
Low-tack professional edge tape Masking paper for sharp lines Drop sheets and plastic to catch overspray
Even curved or rebated frames get full edge treatment. It takes time, but it means:
No overspray No feathered edges No cleanup disasters
3. HVLP Spraying for Factory-Level Finish
We don’t use airless sprayers on windows. They’re too powerful, too broad, and they don’t offer the control needed for intricate aluminium profiles.
Instead, we use HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) systems:
Fine atomisation = smoother finish Less overspray = cleaner results Even build = better gloss level
After the etch primer is applied and cured, we build up thin, even coats of 2-pack gloss lacquer black. This isn’t off-the-shelf paint — it’s industrial grade, UV-tolerant, and engineered for aluminium.
The finish? Stunning.
4. Tape Removal – The Most Satisfying Moment
Watch the video and you’ll see exactly why this part goes viral.
The tape comes off clean.
The edges are razor sharp.
The gloss pops.
You get this perfect contrast between the crisp black frame and the clean glass.
It’s honestly one of the best parts of the job.
The Result: Like-New Windows Without Replacement
Check out the before and after shots from this home:
Before:
Faded cream/grey powder coat Streaky from years of rain, sun, and salt No contrast against the walls Dated, tired appearance
After:
Deep gloss black frames Total uniformity Clean, crisp lines around every pane The kind of finish that makes people say, “Wait, you painted those?”
It’s not just cosmetic — it lifts the entire home.
Why Respraying Beats Replacing
We’ve said it a hundred times, but it still surprises people:
Yes, you can respray powder-coated aluminium.
And here’s why it makes more sense than replacing:
???? Much Cheaper
New aluminium windows? Easily $10,000 to $25,000+ depending on size and number.
Spraying? Often under $5,000 total for a whole house.
???? Way Faster
Most full-house repaints are done in 3 to 5 days.
No waiting on glaziers, no builders, no dust.
???? Colour Freedom
Match Colorbond, Dulux, or choose something bold. You’re not stuck with what the original installer chose.
???? Zero Demolition
Keep your existing glazing, seals, and brickwork. We paint only the frame, right where it is.
FAQ Time – We Hear These All the Time
❓ Will it peel?
Not if it’s prepped correctly. Our system is proven and includes sanding, priming, and 2-pack finish — just like commercial window suppliers.
❓ Can you paint inside and out?
Yes — we can do both sides of the frame. We just need to confirm access and masking arrangements for internal areas.
❓ What colours can I choose?
Any! Popular ones include:
Gloss Black Monument Pearl White Surfmist Woodland Grey Custom Dulux or Colorbond finishes
❓ Do I need to be home?
Nope. We mask and ventilate everything. Many clients choose to head out for the day while we spray.
❓ How long will it last?
We offer a 6-year workmanship warranty, but many of our jobs are still going strong after 8–10 years.
