Behind the Scenes: A Look at Our Window Frame Repainting Process

At RepaintPro, we’re proud to offer a specialist service that brings new life to tired, faded, or outdated aluminium window frames. While our “before and after” images show stunning results, many clients are curious about what actually happens in between — what’s involved, how we protect their property, and what they can expect from the process.

That’s why we’re excited to share this work-in-progress video, offering a real-life look at one of our recent projects on the Gold Coast. In this post, we’ll walk you through exactly what’s happening behind the scenes — from preparation to spraying — and explain why the process matters just as much as the end result.

Every Great Finish Starts with Careful Prep

One of the most common questions we get is: “Will the paint stick?”

The short answer is yes — but only because we put in the time and effort to prepare the surfaces properly. Aluminium is a tricky material to paint, especially when it’s powder coated, as most are. Without proper preparation, paint won’t adhere correctly, leading to peeling, chipping, or bubbling.

In the video, you’ll see our team masking around the window frames with precision. We carefully tape off surrounding brickwork, render, glass, and even nearby plants or furniture to ensure complete protection. We use specialist masking film, drop sheets, and edge tape to keep your home clean and secure during the process.

After masking, we clean every frame thoroughly to remove built-up dirt, grime, and any oxidised coating that might be present. This isn’t just a wipe-down with water — it’s a deep clean using our commercial-grade solutions designed for aluminium preparation.

Once the surface is clean, we sand and abrade the frames to create a profile the paint can grip to. This step is vital for durability. We don’t cut corners here, and it makes all the difference in how long your new finish lasts.

The Power of Professional Spraying

Next comes the most satisfying part — the spray work.

You’ll notice in the video that we don’t use brushes or rollers for aluminium windows (except in rare, hard-to-reach areas). We spray using high-quality airless sprayers that give a smooth, even, factory-like finish.

Spraying allows us to coat every edge, contour, and detail of the window without drips or texture. It’s particularly important for federation-style frames and bay windows, which often have fine trim and intricate profiles.

In this project, we were respraying from Primrose (a soft cream-yellow) to Colorbond Black Gloss — a modern and bold contrast. Gloss finishes reflect light beautifully but also highlight imperfections, which is why our prep work beforehand is so essential.

The first coat goes on as a fine mist, almost like a primer layer. It gives us the foundation to build on. Then we follow with one or two additional coats depending on coverage, ensuring complete opacity and depth of colour.

Each coat is allowed to flash off (partially dry) before the next is applied, and we always monitor weather conditions carefully to ensure a flawless result.

What You Won’t See (But Matters Just as Much)

Our team works efficiently, but not hastily. Behind the scenes, a lot of time is spent doing quality checks between stages.

We constantly check for any tape lifting or signs of overspray and adjust on the spot. We double-check for dust, bugs, or airborne debris before every coat. We use mobile spray booths when needed to control airflow in tricky conditions. And we always take time to step back and inspect every angle before calling the job complete.

You may also notice us working carefully around security screens. In this case, the customer chose to include security screen repainting in the quote, so we removed them where needed and prepped and sprayed them separately. We offer this as an option for all clients, with fixed pricing, to ensure everything matches seamlessly.

A Clean, Professional Finish – Every Time

After spraying is complete and the final coat has cured, we move into the unmasking stage. This is where the transformation really shines.

The plastic is peeled back, tape is removed, and your brand-new frames are revealed. We then do a full inspection and touch-up any areas that need extra attention. It’s all part of our standard service — not a rushed afterthought.

Finally, we clean the area, remove all masking material, and leave your property as we found it — but with fresh, modern, professional-looking window frames.

Why This Process Matters

You might think, “Isn’t it just painting?” But the truth is, what we do is far more specialised.

Spraying aluminium windows — especially in federation and architectural styles — requires expertise, experience, and attention to detail. At RepaintPro, we’ve been doing this for over four generations, and we’ve developed a process that ensures high-end results without shortcuts.

Your new finish won’t peel, flake, or fade prematurely. Your home will stay protected throughout. You’ll get a result that looks and feels like a factory finish — not a DIY job.

Thinking of Updating Your Windows?

This work-in-progress video is just one example of how we bring old windows back to life. Whether you’re modernising your home for resale, upgrading for energy efficiency, or just tired of faded or mismatched colours, we’re here to help.

All we need are a few photos to get started — no site visit needed initially. You can upload images directly to our dashboard, select your desired colour, and let us know if you want to include flyscreens or security screens.

We’ll review everything and come back with a full quote, including GST and materials. No hidden extras.

Thanks for watching our work in progress!
