Precision in Every Pass: Close-Up of a Gloss Black Window Respray
There’s a special kind of pride that comes from seeing a freshly resprayed aluminium window frame up close. Not just from across the yard — but right there at eye level, where every line, every reflection, every corner speaks volumes about the workmanship behind it.
In this blog post, we’re featuring a recent job where we transformed a dated aluminium frame into a sleek, gloss black finish using HVLP spray application — and the results speak for themselves.
If you’ve ever wondered what a high-end paint finish on metal really looks like, this close-up view will give you an honest look at the detail, the shine, and the smoothness that only professional prep and spray techniques can achieve.
Why Gloss Black?
Gloss black isn’t for the faint of heart — it’s bold, it’s modern, and it reflects everything around it. That’s why we love it.
Unlike flatter colours, gloss black shows every curve and surface detail. When done properly, it’s a stunning, mirror-like finish that adds contrast and depth to any façade. But it also demands more from us as painters — because the higher the gloss, the more unforgiving the surface.
That’s why our prep, our materials, and especially our spray technique have to be flawless.
HVLP — The Professional’s Choice for Detail Work
For this job — like most of our aluminium frame resprays — we used an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray system.
While airless sprayers are great for larger surfaces like garage doors and fencing, HVLP gives us better control, especially on detailed, narrow, or delicate frames. It’s perfect for situations where:
You need an ultra-fine, even coat You want to minimise overspray You’re spraying close to glass or rendered walls You’re aiming for that glossy, glass-smooth finish
HVLP allows us to deliver pinpoint accuracy, especially around the tight angles and ridges found on many older aluminium windows. We’re able to build up layers gradually, ensuring no sagging, no runs, and no heavy edges. Just a flawless, consistent gloss.
The Prep: Where Quality Begins
Gloss black doesn’t hide a thing — so the surface beneath needs to be spotless.
Before any paint hits the metal, we thoroughly clean and degrease each frame to remove any contaminants like silicone, dust, or oxidation. Then we lightly abrade the surface with sanding pads or mechanical scuffers to give the primer a surface it can truly bite into.
After priming with an aluminium-specific etch or adhesion primer, we apply multiple fine coats of our premium gloss black topcoat using HVLP. The result? A deep, rich finish that looks like it was baked on in a factory.
And that close-up footage? That’s no filter. That’s what proper preparation and professional spray work looks like.
The Close-Up Finish: What to Look For
In this video, you’ll see everything we want clients to notice:
Uniform gloss level: No dull spots, no inconsistencies in shine Straight, clean tape lines: Thanks to precision masking and timing No orange peel: Just a smooth, glassy surface across the entire frame Sharp edges around glass: Showing our control and masking skill No overspray on adjacent surfaces — even on complex federation-style frames
When you watch the light reflect off the surface, you’ll see that mirror-like effect that makes gloss black so special. The frame doesn’t just disappear into the façade — it becomes a feature.
Masking: Clean Edges Every Time
Before spraying, we carefully mask off all surrounding surfaces using commercial-grade tape and plastic film. That includes:
Full window glass protection Brick or render shielding Protection for fly screens or security grilles
We always cut our tape by hand, following the frame’s edges exactly. That’s what allows for crisp borders — no fuzzy edges, no bleed lines, and no “spray fade” onto glass.
And the final moment, when we peel that tape back, is one of the most satisfying parts of the job. You’ll see it in the video — that satisfying pull where black meets glass with absolute precision.
The Final Result: Better Than Replacement
Many homeowners assume that changing the look of their windows means ripping them out and starting over. But as you’ll see here, a professional respray can deliver factory-grade results without touching the structure or glass.
Benefits include:
No removal or replacement costs Minimal disruption to your home Faster turnaround — most jobs done in 1–3 days A completely refreshed look
This client was thrilled with the transformation. The old faded finish had made the windows look tired and dated — but with a gloss black makeover, the entire exterior now looks sharper, newer, and far more premium.
Why Close-Ups Matter
We like showing close-up footage of our work for one reason: it leaves no place to hide.
It shows the real finish. The reflections. The edges.
