If you’ve been considering repainting your aluminium windows, what you’re about to read will change how you see the entire process. Because while the final colour might be the star of the show — it’s what happens before that first coat that determines whether your new look lasts 6 months or 6 years.
In this blog, we’re sharing details from a recent job right here in Mudgeeraba, where our team primed a full set of aluminium windows using white Norglass primer. The video footage shows the clean white coating going on after hours of surface prep — and it highlights exactly why this undercoat is such a critical part of the system.
If you’re in the Gold Coast region and looking to modernise faded powder-coated windows without the cost of full replacement, this post is for you.
Why Primer Matters More Than Most People Think
Most paint jobs fail before the topcoat is even applied. Why?
Because of one of two reasons:
The surface wasn’t properly prepped The painter skipped primer
It might sound simple, but primer is the key to a long-lasting, professional finish on aluminium. Powder-coated aluminium is a low surface energy (LSE) material, which means it doesn’t hold paint well unless it’s:
Thoroughly abraded Cleaned properly And most importantly — primed with the right product
In this Mudgeeraba job, we used white Norglass All Surface Primer, a trade-grade, Australian-made product known for its bonding strength on aluminium, steel, and powder-coated surfaces. It sets the stage for a clean, uniform topcoat — especially when going white or light-coloured.
What the Video Shows ????
The video from this job captures our team spraying white primer over cleaned and sanded aluminium window frames. The masking is tight, the prep is complete, and the surface is already starting to transform — even before colour has been applied.
You’ll see:
HVLP spraying in action White primer creating an even, bright base Frames that already look 10x better than when we arrived No overspray, no mess, no shortcuts
It’s a quiet stage of the job — but arguably the most important.
Why We Use White Primer (and When)
We use white primer when the final topcoat will be:
Pearl White Surfmist Classic Cream Or any light-toned colour
Why white?
⚪ It stops dark colour bleed-through ???? It improves colour accuracy for light shades ???? It boosts topcoat longevity by sealing the surface evenly ???? It makes the topcoat go on smoother and more consistently
By using white Norglass primer, we give light colours the cleanest possible base — and help avoid streaks, blotching, or colour inconsistency later.
The Full Process – Start to Finish
Before that white primer ever hits the window frame, there’s a process we follow to the letter. Here’s what it looked like on site in Mudgeeraba.
1. Initial Surface Cleaning
We started by applying wax and grease remover to all frames. This breaks down:
Hand oils Insect spray residue Dust and dirt build-up Any silicone or waxes from previous work
This is the chemical clean — the first layer of protection against future peeling.
2. Mechanical Sanding
Next, we used sanding pads, scuff blocks, and hand tools to abrade the surface. This step is essential for adhesion — no matter how clean the surface is, aluminium needs texture for paint to grip.
We pay extra attention to:
Mitred corners Sill edges Sliding track reveals Older oxidised areas
This took most of the morning on this job — but the difference was instantly visible.
3. Dust and Residue Removal
After sanding, we thoroughly:
Vacuum the entire frame Wipe down with microfibre cloths Inspect for residue, missed spots, or debris
Skipping this step causes contamination between primer and substrate — and that’s where lifting begins. So we don’t skip it. Ever.
4. Full Masking
Before spraying begins, we protect:
Every pane of glass Render and brick edges Floors and garden beds below Any adjacent doors or fittings
We use:
Green edge tape for razor lines Masking paper for frames Plastic and drop sheets for everything else
You’ll see in the video that there’s not a single drip or overspray mark. That’s what precision masking looks like.
5. HVLP Spraying – Primer Stage
Then comes the spraying — white Norglass All Surface Primer delivered via HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer.
Why HVLP?
???? Cleaner spray pattern ???? Less overspray ???? Finer atomisation = smoother finish ???? Great control in tight corners
We apply a full even coat, overlapping slightly and feathering into each section to keep the coat consistent.
Once dry, it forms a tough, grippy layer ready for topcoat.
Location Spotlight: Mudgeeraba
This job took place in Mudgeeraba, one of the Gold Coast’s most consistently growing residential areas. With many homes built in the 90s–2000s, aluminium frames are everywhere — and most are overdue for an update.
We see the following issues frequently in Mudgeeraba homes:
Original bronze or silver frames that no longer match updated renders Powder coat that has chalked or oxidised Sliding doors that look tired, even if mechanically fine Security screens that don’t match or have faded separately
This project included 13 aluminium window frames and 2 sliding doors. The final topcoat will be Pearl White — a timeless colour that suits almost any façade.
Why Clients Are Choosing White Primer Jobs
We’ve had a sharp rise in white and light-coloured repaints lately, and there are some clear reasons why:
✅ It gives a clean, modern look
Especially with coastal-inspired or Hamptons-style homes, white frames make everything look fresh and new.
✅ It works beautifully with render and timber
Pearl White or Surfmist contrasts beautifully with modern render colours and timber decking.
✅ It creates consistency across extensions
Lots of homeowners repaint their frames during renovations to match newly built or updated sections.
✅ It instantly boosts street appeal
Faded, chalky silver or bronze frames drag down the whole front of a home — repainting lifts the entire presentation.
What Comes After White Primer?
Once the white primer is fully dry and cured (usually within 1–2 hours), we return for the topcoat stage.
For this Mudgeeraba job, we’re using:
???? Pearl White Satin Finish ???? 2–3 coats for full build ???? Light sanding between coats if needed
This process will deliver a rich, smooth final finish that feels like new aluminium — and will hold up for years to come.
Common Questions We Get About Primer & Repainting
❓ How long does white primer last without topcoat?
It’s best to topcoat within 24–48 hours to ensure full adhesion. However, Norglass is UV-resistant and will hold up well if weather delays the next stage.
❓ Can I repaint my windows if they’re powder-coated?
Absolutely. Powder coating can be successfully repainted if the correct system is used — including proper sanding and primer. We do this on almost every job.
❓ Can I choose between white or black primer?
We choose the primer colour based on your final topcoat. White for light finishes, black for dark. It’s all part of the quote and tailored to your job.
❓ Is it better to respray than replace?
In most cases, yes. Respraying is:
60–80% cheaper Done in days, not weeks No need to replace glass or frames Keeps the home watertight and sealed
Other Suburbs Where We’ve Used White Primer
In addition to Mudgeeraba, we’ve used white primer in:
???? Reedy Creek – Pearl White on coastal-style homes ???? Clear Island Waters – Hamptons-inspired repaint ???? Broadbeach Waters – Light resprays on canal homes ???? Ashmore & Benowa – Silver-to-white transformations ???? Robina & Varsity Lakes – Older silver and champagne frames updated in Surfmist
Each job is tailored to suit the home’s style, surrounding colours, and the client’s goals.
