Why Taping Matters: The Key to a Perfect Aluminium Window Spray Finish
At RepaintPro, our attention to detail starts with precise masking and taping. Here’s why professional taping is crucial to achieving a clean, flawless aluminium window repaint.
Taping: The Unsung Hero of Aluminium Window Spray Painting
When people think of spray painting aluminium windows, the first thing that comes to mind is the final coat of paint—the smooth, modern finish that transforms faded frames into sharp architectural features. But what they don’t often see is the careful prep work that makes that finish possible.
One of the most important parts of that preparation is taping and masking.
In this blog post, we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the taping stage of our process. The video we’ve shared shows just a small part of what goes into preparing a window for spraying, but it highlights what sets a professional job apart from a DIY one.
Why Taping Is So Important
Spray painting is all about achieving a seamless, uniform finish. That means the spray must be applied cleanly and only to the areas that are meant to be coated.
Without proper taping and masking:
Paint can overspray onto glass, brickwork, render, or cladding Edges can end up uneven or messy You risk damage to surrounding surfaces like screens, tiles, or walls The job looks rushed or unprofessional—no matter how good the paint itself is
That’s why at RepaintPro, we treat masking as one of the most important steps in the job.
Our Taping Process: Precision Before Paint
When we arrive onsite, one of the first things we do is thoroughly mask and tape every surface surrounding the aluminium frames. Here’s what that involves:
1. Edge Taping Around Glass
We apply specialised painter’s tape to the edges of the glass panes where they meet the aluminium frames. This ensures a crisp line and stops paint from creeping onto the windowpane.
2. Protective Film for Full Glass Coverage
We don’t just tape the edges—we apply full masking film or plastic sheeting across the glass itself to protect it completely. This saves time on cleanup and ensures no accidental overspray ends up on the glass.
3. Masking Surrounding Surfaces
Depending on the type of home or building, we tape off:
Brickwork or render Timber cladding Wall edges Tiling, decking, or pavers Window sills and surrounding trims
4. Covering Fly Screens and Security Screens (if left in place)
If screens are left in place, they’re either masked or removed and sprayed separately, depending on what’s been agreed with the client.
We only remove the masking after the final coats are fully dry, which means everything stays clean and sharp right to the end.
Why We Don’t Cut Corners
This type of prep work isn’t fast. It can take a few hours just to tape and mask a set of windows correctly—especially in larger homes or two-storey properties. But it’s worth every minute.
Proper taping:
Delivers razor-sharp paint edges Protects your property from paint damage Saves you from costly clean-ups later Creates a truly professional result
In short, it’s the difference between a rushed repaint and a finish that looks like it was built into the window frame.
Designed for Spray, Not Brush
All our jobs are sprayed using professional airless spray equipment, which atomises the paint and delivers a smooth, even coat across the frame surface. Spraying gives far better results than brushing or rolling—but it also means we have to be extremely careful about overspray.
That’s why our taping and masking is so detailed. We know exactly how the paint behaves and how to shield your home from it.
Real Job, Real Finish
The video accompanying this post shows taping in progress on one of our actual jobs. It’s a quick look behind the scenes, but it shows the care and attention to detail that we apply to every window and every project.
When you choose RepaintPro, you’re choosing a team that doesn’t rush. We’ve spent decades perfecting our process and we know that the final result is only as good as the prep work that came before it.
