What does term VOC mean?
VOC is an acronym for organic compounds and these can be in solid or liquid form that fast convert into gas on reaching room temperature. VOCs can be found in an array of paint products and have been associated to a number of health issues like watery eyes, headaches, respiratory problems like asthma and even cancer.
How much is too much?
At present, EPA regulations limit the VOCs in paint to 250 grams/liter in latex paint and in case of oil based paint it is 380 grams/liter. Thankfully, many new low VOC paints are available easily in market at pocket friendly rates. A low labeled VOC paint is the one that has that has less than 50 grams/liter for flat finish and for glossier finish it has to be less than 150 grams/liter. If your paint has less than 5 grams/liter it can be termed as “zero-VOC” paint.
Is low or no VOC paint costly? Pricing is one of the most important concerns whenever it comes to trying something better and new. Same is the case when it comes to buying a low or zero VOC paint. People are also worried that whether it will be able to provide the same superior coverage to the walls. These worries are fully understandable but they are senseless, because low or zero VOC paints are as affordable as traditional paints.
